on friday i had my perspective totally changed about kids already.. i take my hat off long zi for the fact that she is gonna handle kids in the future.. I went to Chen Su Lan family centre where the kids either came from broken families or their parents had no time for them.. their ages ranged from 6 to 16 and the first activity was for them to do their homework while the helpers assisted them in anything they asked for.. i was tutoring 2 kids and hell i tell you!
those kids can never put their minds on their work at all! they are forever easily distracted over the smallest things that it's so easy to give up being soft to them.. no wonder i see teachers always threatening punishment to kids who get distracted.. SO SORRY teachers who have taught me! I finally understand what you all had to be hard on us..
Back to the 2 kids.. they were supposed to complete like 36 questions! wth la! they are only primary 2 and the teacher gave them so much homework! the productivity level was really not bad! we did ONE question in 1 hour!
there were 3 reasons for this..
1. They kept telling me those lame primary school jokes! you know those lame jokes that you would always laugh in primary school but once you grow up and become mature.. they just become lame to you.. it's all like how some people are called "chee" and others called "bye" and how people would say "chee bye" after a couple of incidents.. haiz.. i had to listen to those stupid jokes for half an hour la! wtf
the worst bit was that i didn't want to shout at them to do their work because i believe that every child should enjoy their childhood and have as much fun as possible.. so i tried to play the incentive game by telling them that they could tell me a joke for every question completed! NO WAY that worked at all.. all that happened was "let me say one more joke please?" imagine the pain i had to go through!!! and when they finally ran out of jokes........ the worse things came into play
2. Suddenly.. they were interested in the origins of my mole.. "kor kor.. how you get the dot at your eye?" haha.. i kind of played with them.. i told them PCK lent his to me.. but they persisited in knowing the truth behind everything
"izzit you born already have?"
"no.. PCK gave it to me"
"there's no such thing as PCK.. tell me where it came from"
"PCK gave it to me"
"NO MORE PCK OK!"
"ok......"
"how you get it?"
"someone gave it to me"
"who?"
"PCK"
"nooooooooooooooooooooo"
so darn funny! they were so disatisfied with my answer that they called along some friends and had a mini debate on how my mole came about.. miraculously.. they gave up and finished one question! and i started to believe that they had gotten back their focus.. but i was wrong..
3. They asked me why i'm so fat!!! BOHOO!!! ='(
"you eat 10 thousand hamburgers a day izzit?"
my god! i was totally deflated already..
Luckily.. the principal saved me by informing that they had a sharing session.. there was a rapper from new zealand who shared his personal life on how he was such a bad guy during his younger days and how he then accepted god into his life and then made it big as a rapper and that he earned 11 thousand new zealand dollars everytime the radio played his song.. he's going to USA this upcoming monday because a record label recently signed him up! good on you dude! really nice talking to you man! it's always so nice to be able to talk to people who have made it big in life after going through a lot in life..
anyway.. the kids being kids.. found it hard to stay focused and listen to what the speaker had to share.. they constantly were playing around despite the speaking trying his best to be as interesting as possilbe!
the last activity of the day was sports.. the boys played soccer while the girls went shopping.. I stayed to watch soccer and i realized that bullying exists in all levels.. the bigger boys will always bully the small ones.. had to constantly separate those who got themselves involved.. and the discipline mistress had to blow her whistle to stop fights from breaking out.. totally reminded me of my primary school days! haha! it was like i was there to see how i lived my life in the past!
i enjoyed myself and i hope i will be given more such opportunities to go back and interact with those kids!!! ^^
